Calm Waters
Sensory-Conscious Restroom Renovation | San Francisco, CA
A small space with an important purpose. This children’s restroom renovation reimagines an outdated, visually overstimulating environment as a calmer and more welcoming space for young children, including those with sensory sensitivities.
The design was inspired by the children themselves and their fascination with a filtration system they could observe within their environment. That curiosity became a starting point for the project’s water-inspired palette, materials, and details. Soft blues, greens, and muted finishes reference water and movement while creating a space that feels playful without becoming overwhelming.
Thoughtful lighting, tactile materials, and carefully considered details further support a comfortable sensory experience. The project reflects our belief that even the most everyday spaces can be designed with care—and that listening to the people who use a space, including its youngest users, can lead to more meaningful design.
